Prof. Gao Xiaohu from the University of Washington was invited to deliver a special report entitled "Targeted delivery of biologics" in our school on May 30, 2018. Prof. Zhang Can was the host of the report. In the report, Prof. Gao introduced the innovative research progress of his research group in the siRNA delivery in vivo. Different from the commonly used cation carriers, Professor Gao's group modified the endogenous rbd protein on the core PEG surface, and achieved efficient delivery of siRNA through specifically binding to rbd protein. This system had high safety and strong applicability and solved the toxicity problem of cationic carriers in vivo. Prof. Gao's team also studied the intracellular lysosomal escape of siRNAs. Based on the combination of dyes and genes, the dyes and cholesterol were modified by non-covalent combination on siRNAs. The modified siRNAs did not enter cells through endocytosis, thus reduced the process lysosomal escape, which had greatly improved the delivery efficiency.
The siRNA delivery is currently a research hotspot and the report was rich and detailed. Prof. Gao’s speech was humorous, and he explained the profound things in a simple way. The teachers and students attending the meeting showed high interest and the on-site discussion was very enthusiastic. This report was of great significance to promote exchanges between laboratories.
Professor Gao Xiaohu received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Nankai University in 1998, a Ph.D. in chemistry from Indiana University in 2004, and he did the postdoctoral research in Department of Biomedical Engineering in Emory University and Georgia Tech from 2004-2005. Prof. Gao was appointed professor of the Department of Biological Engineering and Nanotechnology Center of the University of Washington in 2005. His research focuses on nanobiomedicine, biomolecular engineering, imaging, and targeted drug delivery systems. Prof. Gao is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award, and he has been a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) since 2003 and was elected to the American College of Medicine and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) fellow in 2013. Currently Professor Gao has published more than 80 academic papers, including Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Communications, Nature Protocols, and Nature Biomedical Engineering. Total citations of his papers exceed 15,000 (Google Scholar).
